Around the world, governments are making the teaching of computational thinking compulsory, so it is increasingly essential to provide children with tools that will help them to learn this. Unfortunately, many adults do not have prior knowledge of coding/programming, and wouldn’t know how to help.

Bits and Bytes has been designed to help teach the following skills:

  • Understanding simple algorithms and how to implement them
  • How to design, build, debug and improve simple programmes
  • Understanding sequencing, selection, repetition, variables, inputs and outputs

The game is a great platform for encouraging the use of coding vocabulary – pupils were eager to teach each other the game and resources were easy to organise. It was useful to have the children learning computer skills without the need for a PCMs Shannon Thewlis - Year 5 and 6 school teacher

Bits & Bytes has been designed to be flexible (it can be made easier to play or harder to suit a wide range of ages). It is compact for easy storage. It encourages creativity by allowing children to customise the rules. It is very affordable (less than 10% of the price of a cheap netbook). It helps children to develop the required mindset for coding, as well as teaching the fundamentals of problem solving, issuing instructions and more.
